The time travel narrative is still brilliantly designed, the combat system feels modern despite its 1995 origins, and the New Game Plus feature it pioneered continues to influence game design decades later. The PC port had a rocky start with mobile-derived assets, but updates have restored it to a quality worthy of the game itself. If you haven't played Chrono Trigger, you owe it to yourself.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth takes everything the Remake built and expands it into a sprawling open world adventure that fixes most of its predecessor's pacing issues while introducing a few new ones. The combat system reaches new heights with party synergy mechanics, the character writing continues to shine, and the sheer volume of content is impressive. Some of that content lands better than others, and the open world can feel bloated in spots, but the highs here are among the best the franchise has ever achieved.

Octopath Traveler II addresses nearly every criticism of its predecessor while keeping everything that worked. The eight stories are stronger and more interconnected, the world feels more cohesive, the day-night cycle adds new dimensions to exploration and Path Actions, and the combat system remains one of the best in the turn-based genre. It's still eight separate stories rather than one unified narrative, but the connections between them are meaningful this time. A remarkable improvement that turns a promising foundation into a genuinely excellent JRPG.

The Intergrade edition's Yuffie DLC adds welcome variety and a compelling side story.

FFX-2's tonal whiplash from its predecessor is jarring, but its job system is surprisingly deep. The PC port is functional if unspectacular, and the value of two full RPGs in one package is hard to argue with.

Dragon Quest VIII on mobile is a full-scale JRPG that has no business being this good on a phone. The Akira Toriyama art style looks gorgeous on modern screens, the turn-based combat holds up perfectly with touch controls, and the world is big enough to get genuinely lost in for 60+ hours. The portrait-mode-only restriction and occasional touch interface awkwardness remind you this is a port rather than a native mobile game. Some quality-of-life features from later re-releases are missing. But as a premium RPG with no microtransactions, no energy systems, and no compromises on content, it remains one of the best ways to experience a classic JRPG on the go.

The RPG elements feel stripped back compared to series tradition, the side quest design is frequently disappointing, and the pacing between major story beats can drag. Octopath Traveler pioneered the HD-2D visual style that has since become a genre standard, and its Break and Boost combat system provides some of the most satisfying turn-based battles in modern JRPGs. The eight-character structure offers tremendous freedom in how you approach the game, but the complete lack of interaction between character storylines creates a disconnect that undermines the party concept. The individual stories range from compelling to generic, and grinding between chapters can feel tedious. The presentation and combat carry the game through its narrative inconsistencies.

Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent brings the HD-2D magic and strategic break-and-boost combat to mobile in a single-player package that respects your time better than most gacha games, though the gacha system occasionally gates story content in ways that test your patience.

NieR Re[in]carnation delivered Yoko Taro's signature melancholic storytelling and Keiichi Okabe's haunting soundtrack in a mobile format that faithfully captured the series' atmosphere. The narrative, art direction, and music stood among the best available on mobile devices. The turn-based combat was barebones, the gacha rates were punishing, and the game ended worldwide service in April 2024, making it a beautiful but flawed experience that ultimately couldn't sustain itself.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius delivered a surprisingly complete JRPG experience on mobile, with explorable towns, challenging boss trials, a full original story, and pixel art that evoked the series' golden era. Eight years of aggressive power creep and predatory gacha mechanics eventually wore down even the most devoted players, but at its best, FFBE proved that a mobile Final Fantasy could feel like the real thing.
