1995 · David Fincher · 127 min · Crime / Thriller

A crime thriller that set the standard for everything that followed it, built on an oppressively dark atmosphere and a final act that still shocks people three decades later. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt bring two very different energies that collide in the best possible way, and Andrew Kevin Walker's screenplay gives them a framework that rewards patience with one of the most devastating payoffs in modern cinema. The middle stretch asks for your attention during the investigative legwork, and not every character gets the development they deserve. None of that changes the fact that this is a film people still talk about, still argue about, and still recommend to anyone who hasn't seen it.

Don't Starve: Pocket Edition

4.1

2015 · Survival / Roguelike

Don't Starve: Pocket Edition brings Klei's unforgiving wilderness survival game to mobile with its atmosphere and depth fully intact. The hand-drawn art style looks gorgeous on small screens, the crafting and exploration systems provide dozens of hours of tense discovery, and the DLC expansions add enormous replay value. Touch controls can't match the precision of mouse and keyboard, and the game offers almost no guidance, but players willing to learn through failure will find one of the most rewarding survival experiences available on mobile.

The Bad Guys: Brightblade

3.3

2019 · Eric Ugland · 352 pages · Fantasy / LitRPG

The Bad Guys: Brightblade is the companion series to Ugland's Good Guys, following a protagonist who's everything Montana isn't: calculating, morally flexible, and willing to play the villain to get ahead. The darker tone provides a contrast that's interesting in the context of both series, and the willingness to embrace a ruthless protagonist gives the book an edge. The writing and plotting limitations carry over from the Good Guys, and the dark anti-hero archetype is less distinctive in LitRPG than Montana's warmth was.
