How we rate

2015 · Adventure

The third Sorcery! game is where inkle stopped adapting and started inventing. While the previous entries expanded Steve Jackson’s gamebooks with additional content, Sorcery! 3 introduces a time-manipulation mechanic so ambitious that it redefines what the series is capable of. You can literally drag time forward and backward across a vast wilderness, watching towers crumble and rebuild, armies march and retreat, and entire landscapes transform between eras.

The Baklands, a treacherous wasteland between the city of Kharé and the fortress of Mampang, becomes a playground of temporal puzzles. Community response to this entry was particularly enthusiastic, with players and critics recognizing that inkle had created something genuinely new within the interactive fiction space.

Time Itself as a Game Mechanic

The time beacon is a stroke of brilliance. By dragging a beacon across the map, you shift the entire landscape between past and present. A tower that lies in ruins in the present stands tall in the past, complete with inhabitants and secrets. A chasm that blocks your path now was solid ground centuries ago. This mechanic transforms exploration from choosing between paths into choosing between eras, and the implications ripple through every encounter and puzzle.

The open-world structure is the most expansive in the series. The Baklands stretch in every direction, offering dozens of locations to explore in both time periods. The non-linear design means no two players will experience the same sequence of events, and the time mechanic multiplies the possible routes exponentially. Areas that seemed empty in one era reveal entire storylines in another.

inkle’s original additions to the lore reach their peak here. New characters, factions, and mysteries fill the Baklands with content that never appeared in the source material. The serpents, mysterious entities that guard the wilderness, create some of the most memorable encounters in the series. Each serpent presents a unique challenge that requires creative thinking and often multiple attempts to overcome.

The writing matches the mechanical ambition. Time-displaced characters grapple with loss, memory, and purpose in ways that give the narrative genuine emotional weight. The wasteland setting could have felt empty, but the density of stories packed into its landscape makes every exploration session rewarding.

Where the Baklands Test Your Patience

The sheer openness can be overwhelming. With so many directions to explore and two time periods to check for each location, completionist players may feel paralyzed by options. The game provides minimal guidance on priority, trusting the player to find their own path through a very large space.

Some time-manipulation puzzles have solutions that feel obscure. The logic of what changes between eras isn’t always consistent, and certain puzzles require trial-and-error experimentation that can feel arbitrary rather than deductive. When the time mechanic clicks, it’s magical. When it doesn’t, you’re dragging the beacon back and forth hoping something changes.

The game’s difficulty assumes familiarity with the series. Players who jump in at Part Three without the spells, items, and narrative context from previous entries will find themselves at a significant disadvantage. While technically playable standalone, the experience loses a lot without the foundation of Parts One and Two.

When a Series Finds Its True Form

Sorcery! 3 represents the moment when inkle’s ambition fully caught up with their skill. The time mechanic isn’t a gimmick layered on top of existing gameplay but a fundamental reimagining of how interactive fiction can work. Every choice gains additional weight when you can see its consequences across centuries, and the open wilderness provides the space for those consequences to play out in unexpected ways.

Should You Play Sorcery! 3?

If you’ve played the first two entries, this is where the series earns its reputation. The time mechanic elevates everything that came before, and the open wilderness provides the most content-rich installment in the series. It’s also the most technically impressive, with the beacon dragging mechanic creating moments of genuine wonder.

Skip it if you haven’t played the first two games. Sorcery! 3 is explicitly a continuation, and jumping in here would be like starting a novel at chapter three. Play the series in order for the full impact.

The Verdict on Sorcery! 3

Sorcery! 3 is the series’ high point and one of the most inventive interactive fiction games ever released on any platform. The time-manipulation mechanic transforms a strong franchise into something extraordinary, giving players a reason to explore every corner of the Baklands across two eras. The openness can overwhelm and some puzzles frustrate, but the ambition and execution here are remarkable. inkle took a gamebook adaptation and turned it into a genuine innovation in narrative game design.
