Sorcery! 2

How we rate

2013 · Adventure

If the first Sorcery! was inkle proving the concept, the second entry is where the studio started showing what the format could really do. Kharé, Cityport of Traps lives up to its name. The entire city is a puzzle, with gates that require specific spell lines to open, and discovering those lines means exploring every corner, talking to every character, and sometimes replaying entire sections to find what you missed.

The jump in scope from Part One is immediately apparent. Where the Shamutanti Hills offered a mostly linear trek with branching paths, Kharé is an open city you can explore in multiple directions. The non-linear structure gives the game a sense of freedom that most interactive fiction struggles to achieve, and the puzzle of the city gates provides a compelling reason to dig deep into every district.

Kharé’s Labyrinth of Secrets and Spell Lines

The city gate puzzle is the game’s masterstroke. To progress, you need to find spell lines scattered across Kharé, each held by a different NPC or hidden in a different location. This transforms the entire city into an interconnected mystery where every conversation might contain a vital piece of information. The structure encourages thorough exploration without feeling like a checklist, because you never quite know where the next spell line will turn up.

inkle added enormous amounts of original content beyond the source material. Entire neighborhoods, characters, and storylines exist in Sorcery! 2 that weren’t in Steve Jackson’s original gamebook. The city feels lived-in and dangerous, with criminal gangs, corrupt guards, mystical scholars, and desperate refugees all occupying the same streets. The writing gives each area a distinct personality while maintaining the oppressive atmosphere of a city that wants to eat you alive.

The swindlestones gambling game is a clever addition. This dice-based bluffing game appears in taverns throughout the city, offering both a minigame distraction and a way to earn gold. The rules are simple but the bluffing adds enough depth to make it genuinely engaging rather than throwaway.

Character continuity from Part One deepens the experience. Your choices, inventory, and spell knowledge carry forward, making your specific version of the adventure feel personal. NPCs you helped or crossed in the hills might reappear in Kharé with memories of your actions.

Where Kharé’s Traps Catch the Player

The non-linear structure that makes the city feel open can also make it feel directionless. Without clear guidance on where to find spell lines, some players spend too long wandering districts they’ve already explored, hoping to trigger new encounters. The game could do more to nudge players toward unexplored content without sacrificing the satisfaction of discovery.

The increased content length means the pacing can sag in the middle sections. Some areas of the city feel more developed than others, and hitting a less interesting district after a run of compelling encounters creates an uneven rhythm.

Death and failure remain punishing. While the rewind mechanic returns, some paths through the city lead to situations that are very difficult to survive without specific items or spell knowledge, and discovering this late in a run can feel frustrating rather than challenging.

A City That Rewards Obsessive Explorers

Sorcery! 2 is built for players who want to turn over every stone. The spell line puzzle practically demands multiple playthroughs, and each run through the city reveals new paths, encounters, and secrets. This design philosophy creates incredible value for curious players but can alienate those who prefer a single definitive playthrough. The game asks you to treat failure as information rather than punishment, and players who embrace that mindset will find one of the richest interactive fiction experiences available on mobile.

Should You Play Sorcery! 2?

If you played and enjoyed the first Sorcery!, this is a significant upgrade in every dimension. The city setting provides more content, more freedom, and more reasons to replay than the hills ever could. It’s also a reasonable entry point for new players, though starting from Part One will make the experience richer.

Skip it if you found the first game’s trial-and-error approach frustrating, because Kharé doubles down on it. Players who want clear objectives and linear progress will struggle with the open city structure.

The Verdict on Sorcery! 2

Sorcery! 2 takes the strong foundation of its predecessor and builds something bigger, deeper, and more ambitious. The city of Kharé is a genuine achievement in interactive world-building, with its gate puzzle providing a structural hook that makes exploration feel purposeful. The pacing stumbles in spots and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, but these are minor costs for a game that offers this much content, creativity, and replay value. It’s the entry where inkle’s Sorcery! series goes from promising to essential.
