The Night Manager

4.3

2016 · 1 Season · BBC One · Spy Thriller

The Night Manager is a glamorous, perfectly cast spy thriller that proves John le Carre's slow-burn espionage can work as prestige television event programming. Tom Hiddleston is magnetic as the undercover operative, Hugh Laurie is terrifying as the arms dealer, and the six-episode structure means not a single scene is wasted. The show trades some of le Carre's moral complexity for visual spectacle, but the result is one of the most stylish and gripping limited series of the decade.

Black Bag

4.1

2025 · Steven Soderbergh · 94 min · Thriller / Drama

Black Bag is a 94-minute adult thriller about whether a spy can love his wife and still investigate her, and it plays like a scalpel in an era of sledgehammers. Michael Fassbender's George is a legendary lie-detector married to Cate Blanchett's equally formidable Kathryn, and when her name appears on a list of suspected traitors, their marriage becomes the case. Steven Soderbergh stages espionage as dinner parties, polygraphs, and conversational chess, and the result is the rare spy film where the sexiest thing on screen is trust. Modest stakes and an abrupt wrap-up are the price of all that discipline.

Tenet

3.5

2020 · Christopher Nolan · 151 min · Sci-Fi, Action, Thriller

Tenet is Christopher Nolan at his most ambitious and his most frustrating. The action sequences are staggering, the practical effects push the boundaries of what can be done on camera, and the time-inversion concept is unlike anything else in cinema. But the film's refusal to develop its characters or make its dialogue audible turns what could have been a masterpiece into a spectacular puzzle that's easier to admire than to love. If you watch Nolan for the ideas and the craft, this delivers. If you watch for the human element, you'll leave cold.
