Metaphor: ReFantazio is the most ambitious JRPG of its generation, taking the social simulation framework Atlus perfected in Persona and transplanting it into a high fantasy setting with a political narrative about prejudice, tribalism, and the meaning of leadership. The Archetype system offers extraordinary class customization, the turn-based combat is the studio's most refined work, and the art direction creates a world unlike anything else in the genre. The calendar system's time pressure won't appeal to everyone, and the game's length demands real commitment. But for players who connect with its vision, it's a masterwork.

Persona 5 Royal is one of those rare 100-hour games that earns nearly every one of those hours. The fusion of dungeon crawling, social simulation, and style-forward presentation creates something no other RPG has managed to replicate. Combat could use more teeth on default settings, and Mementos remains a slog no matter how many quality-of-life improvements get layered on top, but the highs here are extraordinary. Royal's third semester adds a story arc that many consider the best stretch in the entire game. If you have the time and patience for a JRPG that demands your full attention, this one rewards it like few others.

Persona 4 Golden is one of the most beloved JRPGs ever made, and its PC release finally made it accessible to a wider audience. The murder mystery storyline hooks you early, the social link system gives every relationship genuine emotional weight, and the cast of characters is among the most endearing in gaming. The dungeon crawling is serviceable rather than spectacular, and the game demands a massive time commitment, but the payoff for that investment is a story and a group of friends that stay with you long after the credits roll.

Persona 3 Reload is a stunning ground-up remake that brings the darkest entry in the modern Persona series into the current generation with overhauled visuals, refined combat, and expanded social content. The themes of mortality and the meaning of life hit with undiminished force, carried by a stylish presentation and a soundtrack that blends the familiar with the new. Tartarus remains a slog in its middle sections despite improvements, and the absence of the female protagonist route from Portable is a notable omission. But the emotional core of Persona 3 has never been presented this well.
