Bad Sisters

4.4

2022 · 2 Seasons · Apple TV+ · Dark Comedy Thriller

Bad Sisters is that rare show that can make you laugh at a murder plot and cry over a family dinner in the same episode. Sharon Horgan built something special with this Irish dark comedy thriller, anchored by five performances so natural they make sisterhood feel like something you can reach through the screen and touch. The tonal balance occasionally wobbles, and the second season can't quite match the first's propulsive energy, but the Garvey sisters are among the most compelling family units in recent television.

2018 · Oyinkan Braithwaite · 240 pages · Thriller

Oyinkan Braithwaite's debut is a wickedly sharp novel about a nurse in Lagos who keeps helping her beautiful younger sister clean up after her boyfriends end up dead. At 240 pages, it moves fast, cuts deep, and never wastes a word. The brevity that makes it so propulsive also limits its emotional range, but as a black comedy about family loyalty pushed to its absolute breaking point, it's one of the most distinctive thrillers in recent memory.

2019 · Erin A. Craig · 416 pages · Gothic Fantasy

Erin A. Craig takes the fairy tale of the Twelve Dancing Princesses and dresses it in gothic horror, setting it on a remote island estate where the daughters of a powerful family keep dying under mysterious circumstances. The atmosphere is the book's great triumph: fog-shrouded cliffs, creaking manor houses, midnight balls that feel increasingly sinister. Annaleigh is a sympathetic protagonist whose investigation into her sisters' deaths keeps the pages turning. The gothic elements are genuinely unsettling at their best. The mystery is satisfying if somewhat predictable, the romance feels underdeveloped, and the resolution pivots to a supernatural explanation that not all readers find earned. A strong atmospheric read that values mood over mechanics.
