It doesn't dig as deep into isolation and despair as the premise could allow, and the final act pushes credibility further than it needs to. But as a celebration of human problem-solving and stubborn optimism, it's one of the most satisfying sci-fi films of its decade.

Ridley Scott's staging of the siege of Jerusalem remains some of the finest large-scale action filmmaking of the 2000s, and the film's surprisingly even-handed treatment of its Muslim characters gives it a moral seriousness that elevates it above standard genre fare. Orlando Bloom remains the weak link at the center, but the director's cut builds enough around him that it matters less.

But the script leans too heavily on echoing its predecessor's beats, Paul Mescal's lead performance runs cooler than the story needs, and the legacy sequel structure creates expectations the film can't quite fulfill. It's competent epic filmmaking that falls short of greatness.
