One Hundred Years of Solitude

4.5

1967 · Gabriel Garcia Marquez · 417 pages · Magical Realism

This is the novel that defined magical realism for most of the world, and more than fifty years after publication it still holds that ground. The writing is dense, the family tree is a puzzle, and the repeating names will trip you up more than once. None of that stops it from being one of the most ambitious and rewarding novels ever written. It asks more of its readers than most books dare to, and it pays back that investment many times over. Not everyone will finish it, but almost everyone who does will understand why it mattered.

The Seven Year Slip

3.9

2023 · Ashley Poston · Fiction / Romance

The Seven Year Slip hands a grieving book publicist her late aunt's magical New York apartment, a home that occasionally slips seven years into the past, and lets her fall for the aspiring chef renting the second bedroom back then, a man whose present-day self she could meet any time she's brave enough to look. Ashley Poston runs the impossible premise as a grief novel wearing a romance's clothes, lemon pies and pistachio-sauce mornings against the ache of a life on pause. The magic follows feelings rather than rules and the middle idles a loop too long. The landing, when it comes, earns the tears it collects.
