Miracle
2004 · Gavin O'Connor · 135 min · Drama / Sports
Miracle is the rare sports movie that earns its title, the 1980 US Olympic hockey team's impossible run rebuilt around Kurt Russell's career-best turn as Herb Brooks, the coach who beat the unbeatable Soviets by making twenty college kids hate him together. The hockey is shot with real-players authenticity the genre almost never achieves, the Cold War context gives every shift geopolitical weight, and the famous final game still plays like live television even when you know the score. It's long, the players blur outside a handful, and the formula is visible. The execution buries every complaint. This is the team-sports movie done right.
