Cool Runnings is the feel-good machine that three decades of rewatches haven't worn out, a fictionalized romp about the Jamaican bobsled team's Olympic debut that trades accuracy for heart and wins the trade decisively. John Candy's final great role gives the comedy its soul, the four sledders are drawn broad and loved anyway, and the finish line remains one of sports cinema's perfect endings, dignity snatched from disaster. Almost nothing in it happened the way it shows, and the real story might honestly be better. As pure underdog uplift, though, few films have ever run the track cleaner.
