Little Women
2019 · Greta Gerwig · 135 min · Drama / Romance
Little Women is Greta Gerwig's warm, structurally daring take on Louisa May Alcott's novel, and it turns a story adapted half a dozen times into something that feels newly written. The nonlinear structure cuts between the March sisters' childhood and their adult disappointments so that each timeline sharpens the other, Saoirse Ronan makes Jo's ambition burn, and Florence Pugh performs the seemingly impossible rehabilitation of Amy. Viewers unfamiliar with the story can find the time jumps disorienting, and traditionalists miss the book's linear comfort. For nearly everyone else, this is the definitive modern version.
