Amelie

4.3

2001 · Jean-Pierre Jeunet · 122 min · Romantic Comedy

Amelie is pure cinematic joy wrapped in accordion music and golden-green light. Audrey Tautou's performance anchors a film that could easily float away on its own whimsy, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's visual imagination produces something that looks and feels like nothing else. The love story is thin and the version of Paris on display is more fairy tale than reality, but neither of those things stops the film from working its charm. Two decades later, people still fall in love with this movie, and it's easy to understand why.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

4.2

2025 · JRPG · PC / Steam

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a stunning debut from Sandfall Interactive that blends turn-based JRPG combat with real-time dodge and parry mechanics to create something that feels genuinely fresh. The art direction, inspired by Belle Epoque France and surrealist imagery, is extraordinary, and the premise of a world where a giant paintbrush erases everyone above a certain age creates immediate narrative urgency. The story doesn't quite sustain its promising setup through to the conclusion, and some late-game encounters test patience more than skill. But as a first outing from a new studio, it's remarkably accomplished.

Lupin

3.8

2021 · 3 Seasons · Netflix · Mystery, Thriller, Crime

Lupin is a stylish and infectious heist thriller elevated by Omar Sy's magnetic screen presence and a Parisian setting that drips with charm. The show's best moments combine clever disguises, elaborate cons, and genuine emotional stakes rooted in a father-son story that gives the flashy surface real weight. Plot logic doesn't always hold up under scrutiny, and the later parts lean heavier on action at the expense of the intricate scheming that made the early episodes so satisfying. But as escapist entertainment with a cultural identity all its own, Lupin delivers something that feels fresh in a crowded streaming market.
