Jurassic Park

4.7

1993 · Steven Spielberg · 127 min · Sci-Fi / Adventure

Jurassic Park turned six minutes of computer-generated dinosaurs and a collection of full-scale animatronics into one of the most important movies ever made. Spielberg knew exactly how much to show, when to hold back, and how to let John Williams' score do the heavy lifting in between. The human characters don't always match the creatures sharing the screen with them, but the filmmaking on display is so precise and so confident that it barely matters. More than thirty years later, the effects still look better than most of what followed, and the T-Rex breakout sequence still hits as hard as it did opening weekend. This is blockbuster filmmaking at its absolute peak.

Jurassic World Evolution 2

3.8

2021 · Simulation / Management · PC / Steam

Jurassic World Evolution 2 is a significant improvement over the original, with better dinosaur AI, more biome variety, and management systems that actually demand your attention. The dinosaurs themselves are the star, beautifully animated and behaving with enough personality to make every enclosure feel alive. Chaos Theory mode is a highlight for franchise fans, and the sandbox mode provides the creative freedom the first game lacked. The campaign is short and restrictive, the DLC adds up quickly, and the management depth still trails behind the best tycoon games, but as a dinosaur park simulator, it's the best one available.

Ark: Survival Evolved

3.5

2017 · Survival / Sandbox · PC / Steam

Ark: Survival Evolved is a massive, ambitious survival game that delivers an experience unlike anything else through its dinosaur taming and riding mechanics. The thrill of taming your first Rex, building a base overlooking a prehistoric landscape, and exploring vast maps with friends creates memories that keep players invested despite the game's many problems. And there are many problems: performance is poor, bugs are persistent, the time commitment is extreme, and the official server experience can be hostile. Ark is a rough, unpolished gem that shines brilliantly when everything works and frustrates deeply when it doesn't.

ARK: Survival Evolved (Mobile)

3.3

2018 · Survival / Action RPG

ARK: Survival Evolved on mobile is an ambitious attempt to bring the full dinosaur survival experience to phones and tablets. Taming, riding, and battling dinosaurs on a mobile device is impressive when it works, and the scope of the open-world crafting and building systems is unmatched on the platform. Performance issues plague the experience on most devices, the controls are a constant battle against the touchscreen, and the monetization adds premium advantages that undermine the survival fantasy. It's a technically impressive port that's frequently frustrating to actually play.

Ark: Survival Ascended

3.2

2023 · Survival / Sandbox · PC / Steam

Ark: Survival Ascended is the Unreal Engine 5 remake of Survival Evolved that the community had mixed feelings about from announcement to execution. The visual upgrade is dramatic, with environments and creatures that look genuinely impressive. But the performance issues that plagued the original are worse here, the content is a fraction of what Evolved offered after years of expansions, and the pricing model of charging full price for what is essentially a remaster frustrated longtime players. The core Ark gameplay loop is intact and still compelling, but Ascended needs significant additional development before it justifies its existence alongside the original.
