The premise is gripping, the three-protagonist structure covers different aspects of this demon-plagued world, and the action sequences are visceral and well-choreographed. Arlen's journey from frightened boy to the tattooed warrior of the title drives the book with real momentum. The other viewpoint characters, Leesha and Rojer, don't always match his energy, and the middle section loses focus as it tries to service three coming-of-age arcs simultaneously. The world-building is stronger on concept than detail. But the core conceit of a world under nightly siege is so compelling that it carries the book past its rough patches.
