Die Hard

4.5

1988 · John McTiernan · 132 min · Action / Thriller

Die Hard rewrote the rules of action cinema by replacing the invincible superhuman with a barefoot cop who bleeds, panics, and talks to himself through the worst night of his life. Bruce Willis made vulnerability look heroic, Alan Rickman made villainy look elegant, and John McTiernan kept the whole thing wound tight inside a single building on Christmas Eve. A handful of thin supporting characters and a few plot conveniences are the only real knocks against it. More than three decades later, this is still the film that comes up first when anyone tries to name the best action movie ever made.

Elf

4.1

2003 · Jon Favreau · 97 min · Comedy / Holiday

Elf is the last film to fight its way into the Christmas canon and stay there, a fish-out-of-water comedy about a human raised by elves loose in Manhattan, powered by Will Ferrell's total, shameless commitment to childlike joy. Jon Favreau shoots it with old-fashioned craft, forced perspective and stop-motion nodding to the specials it grew up on, and James Caan's grinch of a father gives the sugar its necessary salt. The third act wobbles into plot it doesn't need, and the sweetness is a lifestyle choice. Two decades of December rotations have delivered the verdict anyway. It's a classic, certified annually.
