The prose is serviceable but not distinctive, the pacing in the first half is uneven, and some character motivations feel underdeveloped. As a series opener, it's the foundation for what becomes a phenomenon. As a standalone reading experience, it's a mixed bag that flashes brilliance without sustaining it.
